Shared Hosting vs VPS Hosting. Which Is For You?

Shared Hosting

In shared hosting, as the name intuitively implies, all accounts share the available resources with all others on the server. Those resources include both hardware and software, such as CPU, RAM, and disk space. The major advantage should be its price competitiveness. Many hosting companies do provide very price competitive offers, some even can afford to  provide free trial for the first few months simply because the cost of server maintenance is amortized over many customers. Its currently the most popular form of different hosting options. It does attract many personal website owner and small business who do not want to deal with system administration and look for economic options. Due to the property that many websites are sharing one server, the most visible drawbacks include your website performance will directly be affected by other website users behaviors. Your system performance such as page loading time will be seriously affected if the general traffic is heavily loaded. There are other limitations such as you do not have the root access to the servers and customizations are not likely to be possible.

VPS Hosting

Compared to shared hosting, VPS hosting allows for more customization. You are still sharing a server, but the way how you share the server changes. You are paying for your own portion of the server which is not shared by everyone. In general, you have more power and flexibility according what you have paid. This is like living in an apartment where you have more autonomy than living in a condo. Though very unlikely, your server conditions may still be affected by other users who are on the same server, and vice versa. Downtime may still happen if some “naughty” users who try to run unoptimized script or any action that causes unusual traffic.
